Wells Fargo Bank – “Make-a-Quake”
2005 -2006: San Francisco, CA
Designer: West Office Exhibition Design / BBI / Wells Fargo Bank
April 18th, 2006 was the centennial of the earthquake that flattened our city. As part of the commemoration we built this earthquake ride for the Wells Fargo History Museum.
Most earthquake exhibits include a shake table where a motor shakes a base. The problem here is that visitor safety precludes simulating an 8.6 magnitude earthquake. A quake that size destroyed San Francisco!
So we turned the experience on its head and made the visitor shake and jump on the spring mounted platform. An accelerometer measures the motion and indicates the approximate magnitude on the 2 digit LED display and increases the volume of a rumbling soundtrack. This way the visitor compares their efforts to the incredible power of the 1906 earthquake.
