Consultant: Arup
San Francisco, CA (2016)
The Lighthouse challenged Arup and BBI to provide a set of corporate facilities including public spaces, boardroom and conference rooms, and video and audio recording systems that could be operated by blind and visually impaired staff members and visitors without assistance or awkwardness.
Working in close collaboration with the client, we developed the tactile interface, electronics, and the software to run all of the typical touchscreen functionality without using a touchscreen. Highlights include servo driven controls that track state from multiple locations, “talk to me” buttons that give audible feedback when requested, and of course full Braille labeling produced in-house.
This project truly typifies BBI and Arup at our best: solving difficult wide ranging design and production challenges together for our clients.
